Speech, language and swallowing rehabilitation identifies and optimizes underlying anatomic and physiologic strengths and weaknesses related to communication and swallowing effectiveness. This includes physical functions such as strength, mental functions such as attention as well as components of communication such as articulatory proficiency, fluency, and syntax.

Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation Services

Torrance Memorial Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation program offers a comprehensive range of speech and swallowing services for individuals from school age through geriatrics. Evaluation and treatment services are available for:

  • Speech and language disorders
  • Neurological conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, neuromuscular speech disorders
  • Geriatric-related conditions
  • Swallowing disorders dysphagia, aspiration
  • Voice disorders
  • Articulation disorders

What to Expect

Our Speech-Language Therapists evaluate the specific needs of each patient and select a technique or a combination of techniques to serve the individual’s needs. Techniques can include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Articulation and voice improvement
  • Cognitive retraining for memory and attention as well as organizing and planning
  • Computer aided speech or alternative non-vocal communication
  • Swallowing therapy
  • Patient and family education
