Our Team in Your Corner

Many of our doctors are current or former athletes who understand your need to remain active. You may get care from:

  • Orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine
  • Primary care physician who focuses on nonsurgical sports medicine
  • Athletic trainer who diagnoses and treats injuries and teaches you how to prevent them
  • Rehabilitation specialists, such as a physical therapist or occupational therapist

If you play sports for a local school or community team, you may see an athletic trainer during practices and competitions. Count on us to help keep you safe while you do what you love.

Tests & Diagnosis

Effective treatment starts with an accurate diagnosis. When you come to us with pain, your doctor will perform a physical exam and may order:

  • Imaging tests, such as an X-ray, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to learn more about your condition
  • Electromyography (EMG) to measure a muscle’s electrical activity when you’re using it or resting

Injuries Treated

Sports medicine experts can care for many injuries that happen during physical activity on the field, on the job, or at your home. Common conditions include:

  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Broken bones and stress fractures
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Dislocated shoulder
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Runner’s knee and jumper’s knee
  • Sprains and strains
  • Swimmer’s shoulder
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or another knee ligament
  • Torn rotator cuff

Treatment Options

Your doctor will work with you to determine the right treatment plan for your condition, lifestyle, and goals. Most often, you’ll start with nonsurgical care, such as:

  • Physical therapy that focuses on the specific movements and muscles needed for your sport or activities
  • Occupational therapy that teaches you how to safely do daily tasks as you recover
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, a biologic treatment that can help you heal sooner
  • Steroid injections that deliver pain-relieving cortisone straight to an injured area of the body

Surgery

If orthopedic surgery is your best treatment option, your surgeon will take the least invasive approach possible. Often, that means using small incisions and advanced technology to reduce pain, scarring, and recovery time.

At Torrance Memorial, you have access to surgeons skilled in the latest techniques and procedures. If you receive a diagnosis of a cartilage injury, you may benefit from cartilage restoration surgery. This advanced treatment helps restore the soft cushioning in your joint, so you can move with less pain.
