Conditions Treated
Your orthopedic specialist can diagnose and treat almost any hip or knee condition.
Hip
- Hip dislocation – Injury or impact that jolts the ball of your hip out of the socket (cup)
- Hip dysplasia – Misalignment of the bones in your joint
- Hip flexor pain – Soreness resulting from overuse of your hip muscles
- Hip fracture – Broken bone
- Hip impingement – Pain that happens when the ball of your joint presses against the socket
- Labral tear – Damage to the soft tissue that covers the hip socket
- Trochanteric bursitis – Inflammation of a fluid-filled sac (bursa) along the outer hip
Knee
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear – Injury to a thick band of tissue that supports your knee
- Chondromalacia (runner’s knee) – Breakdown of soft cartilage under the kneecap
- Hyperextension – Ligament injury that happens when the knee bends the wrong way
- Osgood-Schlatter disease – Painful lump below the kneecap, most often resulting from repetitive motion in children who do sports
- Patellar injury – Damage to your kneecap, often due to a fall or impact
- Torn meniscus – Damage to the soft cartilage between the bones that meet in your joint
Conservative, Nonsurgical Treatments
Your doctor will likely start with nonsurgical care that requires less downtime than surgery. Depending on your symptoms, lifestyle, and goals, your treatment plan may include:
- Physical therapy exercises to gently improve joint strength and flexibility
- Biologics, natural substances that support your body’s healing process
- Viscosupplementation, a procedure that injects hyaluronic acid, a gel-like lubricant, into your joint to let it move more smoothly and comfortably
- Steroid injections that relieve pain and inflammation for up to several months
- Brace to support and stabilize an injured knee as it heals
Sports Medicine
A hip or knee problem can take you off the field, but Torrance Memorial’s sports medicine specialists and athletic trainers will help you get back on it. They’ll not only treat your condition, but also teach you how to prevent another injury, so you can safely enjoy an active lifestyle.
Surgery for Hips & Knees
In some cases, your doctor will recommend a surgical procedure, such as:
- Cartilage restoration – Stimulates the growth of new cartilage (soft cushioning) to help your joint move with less pain
- Joint replacement – Exchanges a worn-out, arthritic knee or hip with an artificial implant that feels natural
- Ligament reconstruction – Replaces a torn ACL, MCL, or another knee ligament with tissue from a healthy tendon
- Osteotomy – Reshapes bones in your joint to make them align better
- Torn labrum surgery – Reattaches soft tissue to your joint’s socket to relieve pain and stiffness
- Torn meniscus surgery – Stitches knee cartilage back together or removes the damaged area of cartilage
Minimally Invasive Surgery (Arthroscopy)
Whenever possible, your orthopedic surgeon will take a minimally invasive approach to your procedure. That means:
- Smaller incisions and shorter scars
- Less impact on healthy tissue, leading to a faster and easier recovery
- No overnight hospital stay in some cases
