Torrance Memorial Medical Center Receives 5-Star Overall Rating From Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Hospital is One of Three in Los Angeles Area and Among 5 Percent Statewide to Earn Five Stars Coupled with a Four-Star Patient Experience Rating
TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 24, 2018 – Torrance Memorial Medical Center has earned a 5-star Overall Hospital Star Rating—the highest possible rating—from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare program. Torrance Memorial is among 8 percent of hospitals in California and 9 percent nationwide to achieve a five-star rating in 2017. Additionally, Torrance Memorial earned a four-star rating from the CMS Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey, which singles out how patients rate their hospital experience in 32 key categories that range from communication with staff, to responsiveness, to overall experience.
The combined 5-star/4-star ranking makes Torrance Memorial one of only three hospitals in the Los Angeles area, and among 5 percent in the state, to have achieved this combined rating.
“These rankings reflect a real commitment, on the part of every staff member at Torrance Memorial, to provide our patients with excellent personalized care that meets and exceeds expectations,” said Craig Leach, president and CEO, Torrance Memorial Medical Center. “Achieving this level of care requires a dedicated team effort by people in all areas of the hospital—from our nurses and doctors, to our housekeeping staff, infection prevention specialists, security guards, volunteers, and countless more.”
Overall Hospital Star Ratings
According to CMS, the Overall Hospital Star Ratings are based on 57 hospital inpatient and outpatient quality measures from seven categories, including mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience (derived from HCAHPS survey results), effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging.
HCAHPS Star Ratings
CMS created the HCAHPS Star Ratings to enable consumers to more quickly and easily access patient experience of care information that is provided on the Hospital Compare website. The time period for the current HCAHPS Summary Star Rating is for patients discharged during April 2016 to March 2017. During this reporting period 4,219 hospitals were eligible for HCAHPS Star Ratings. CMS updates HCAHPS Star Ratings quarterly.
