Affiliation FAQs

What is the benefit of this affiliation to the South Bay community?

This affiliation brings resources and expertise of Cedars-Sinai’s clinical specialties and programs to the South Bay. From oncology, to neuroscience, to advanced medical research and clinical trials, this partnership expands the community’s access to the best in medical care — right here where we live. Cedars-Sinai specialists work collaboratively with Torrance Memorial physicians to deliver the highest standard of care to the South Bay community. Our patients will continue to receive personalized attention and services from their Torrance Memorial doctors, while additionally benefiting from the expertise and experience available through our Cedars-Sinai affiliation.

Why Cedars-Sinai?

Cedars-Sinai is a highly respected academic health system with a deep array of clinical resources and research and education programs. Like Torrance Memorial, it has a longstanding track record of providing high-quality care and a commitment to improving the health of the community. In addition, Cedars-Sinai has a good understanding of and a respect for Torrance Memorial’s history and importance to the community. We have had very positive and productive collaborations with Cedars-Sinai on a number of significant projects, such as the establishment of a Telestroke Program, and more recently, a proposed partnership involving our Cancer Program. Through our collaboration we found that, while much different in size and scope of services, Cedars-Sinai and Torrance Memorial share similar views about how an affiliation could help each institution meet the needs of the communities it serves and fulfill its mission.

What are the main benefits to Torrance Memorial?

This relationship strongly supports the mission of Torrance Memorial as a community-based provider. We are now a part of a health system with greater scale and access to resources focused on improving population health and the delivery of ambulatory care. We also have access to tertiary and quaternary level clinical services and research available at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Was Torrance Memorial Medical Center sold?

No, Torrance Memorial has not been sold. The Torrance Memorial Board of Trustees voted to formally affiliate with Cedars-Sinai and align through a new parent organization named Cedars-Sinai Health System. Both Torrance Memorial Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, along with each of their affiliated organizations, will retain their respective Boards and continue to operate separately, but will affiliate under the new parent organization.

What does this mean for physicians?

Since our two organizations will operate separately, our status as a licensed hospital will not change. Medical staff organizations and medical groups remain separate. The affiliation will provide opportunities for physician leaders to collaborate in such areas as clinical research, best practice developments, population health initiatives, and program expansion. The affiliation may also provide future opportunities to manage some sub-specialty patients locally who would otherwise be cared for at an academic medical center. Also, like Torrance Memorial, Cedars-Sinai appreciates the unique relationships that hospitals and doctors have with their respective communities. Each organization understands that local governance is critical to maintaining these relationships.

Will donations remain in our community?

Yes, past and future donations raised for Torrance Memorial will continue to support the medical center. Every dollar raised will fund the medical center’s mission in the South Bay and benefit residents in our service area. In addition, the function of the Torrance Memorial Foundation Board will not change.
