Torrance Memorial Lundquist Cardiovascular Institute Presents First Women's Heart Health ConferenceCalendar Notice Torrance, CA - The First Women's Heart Health Conference will be presented by the Melanie and Richard Lundquist Cardiovascular Institute at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Saturday, February 2 at 8 a.m. This comprehensive women's heart conference features keynote speaker Sherry Lansing, founder and chair of the Sherry Lansing Foundation and former chair of Paramount Pictures, presenting "Living Healthy: Heart Smart Choices." The fee is $60 for individual attendees with the option of registering a friend at the same time for $30. Registration includes a continental breakfast and boxed lunch. "With a history of heart disease in the family and its prevalence in our society, we are especially interested in seeking medical advances in cardiovascular medicine," said Richard Lundquist. "Torrance Memorial has outstanding leadership and the organizational stability to provide advanced care and research that will benefit our community and beyond." In addition to speaker Lansing's personal account of how she coped with a family affected by heart disease, the conference includes presentations about heart health from experts in the field of cardiology, health screenings and interactive workshops that teach lifestyle strategies to improve and maintain optimal cardiovascular health. Screenings include blood pressure, body mass index, skeletal muscle mass, resting metabolism, risk profile and blood glucose. Speakers include Event Chair Melanie Lundquist, philanthropist and advocate for women, education and healthcare; Medical Keynote Anna B. Mellor, M.D., internal medicine, presenting "Women and Heart Disease: Keeping the 'Heart of the Home' Healthy"; and Claudia Keller of the American Heart Association introducing the AHA's "Go Red for Women" campaign. Additional expert speakers include: Evelyn Dowell, M.D., family practice, presenting "Guiding Your Family to Heart Health: How to be Your Own Advocate," with Lundquist; Vickie Hershberger, M.A., wellness educator, "Stress Reduction for a Strong Heart"; Helaine Lopes, Ph.D., exercise physiologist, "Exercising to Heart Health: An Interactive Exercise Workshop"; Cynthia Williams, M.D.<, endocrinologist,i> "The Hormone Heart Connection: How Hormone Replacement Therapy Affects Heart Health"; Sandy Pieschel, R.N., diabetes educator, and Debra Nessel, R.D., dietitian and diabetes educator, "Blood Glucose and Nutrition: The Other Cardiac Risk Factor"; Eric Castleman, M.D., cardiologist, and Benjamin Rosin, M.D., cardiologist, "Learn Your Lipids: Understanding Your Blood Panel"; Richard Hoffman, M.D., radiologist, and Michele Del Vicario, M.D., cardiologist, "Imaging the Heart: The Early Diagnosis of Cardiac Disease"; Franklin Pratt, M.D., emergency medicine, and Victoria Shin, M.D., cardiologist, "Emergency... What to Do if You Think You're Having a Heart Attack"; and Mark Lurie, M.D., cardiologist, and Lundquist, "The Meaning of Heart Health." Audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session and hear from heart disease survivors L'Cena Rice, Carola Urczyk and Laurie Baran as they share real life experiences on how they made lifestyle changes, practiced stress management and added exercise to improve heart health. The Melanie and Richard Lundquist Cardiovascular Institute of Torrance Memorial was established in 2006 when the Lundquists made a $10 million gift to establish the Institute to support cardiovascular research, programs and education. The Lundquist Cardiovascular Institute will access the latest cardiovascular research in order to promote prevention, early detection and interventional therapies to treat vascular and heart disease. Torrance Memorial's First Women's Heart Conference is presented in collaboration with the American Heart Association, Los Angeles County Division, and sponsored by Melanie and Richard Lundquist, Mrs. Helen Allman, Boston Scientific and The Medicines Company.
