Medication Support Group -- Questions for the Pharmacist

A monthly drop-in group for people with questions about their medicines. It provides help in understanding and managing their medications so that compliance is improved.
This support group will provide information on medications, give participants a better understanding of their medications, empower participants to better manage their medications and increase their compliance, not diagnose medical conditions and not promote any commercial products or sources.
Bring your own medications and questions and concerns.

Cancer Lecture Series

Everything you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask about Ovarian Cancer

Speaker: Ramin Mirhashemi,M.D., FACOG, FACS, Gynecologic Oncology Associates
Learn about genetic issues, early symptoms of the disease, screening, diagnosis, and recent treatment advances. Offered in collaboration with the American Cancer Society LA Coastal Cities Unit and The Wellness Community South Bay Cities.

Diabetes Care Update

The Diabetes Support Group meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the Month.

Aging Well Consultations

A service available through ADVANTAGE to assist those faced with the challenges of caring for an aging loved one. Aging Well services provide answers to age-related concerns, individualized consultations and resource information for health, financial, social and legal needs, cognitive function and depression screenings, medication reviews, home safety and fall risk assessments.

Kids N Fitness

Kids N Fitness is a fun and interactive series of six meetings for overweight children, ages 9 to 12. While kids are making new friends, a team of nutrition and fitness specialists teach and encourage the participants to make choices for a healthier future.
At a Kids N Fitness meeting, kids have fun learning:

  • The benefits of movement by using games, dance and strength training
  • Healthy eating habits
  • To set lifestyle goals and how to make changes in order to reach those goals.

Parents learn too! A parent or guardian attends all class meetings.
Meetings are held on Thursday evenings
Fee $60
All materials are provided by the instructors and include a variety of gifts for the child to take home.
A medical clearance by a physician or nurse practitioner is a necessary prerequisite for enrollment

How to B.E.A.T. Everyday Stress

Stress is part of life. Our reactions to stress may contribute to health problems. By examining our Body, Environment, Attitude and Thoughts, we can learn new ways to respond to stress that lead to optimum health.

Breathe Freely: A Stop Smoking Program

Get significant support for your resolution to stop smoking. Get rid of your troublesome cough, increase your stamina for physical activity and spend your dollars on other pleasures. Thie eight-week series will support you with the tools you need to quit: Behavior modification, smoking cessation aids, support systems, guided imagery, and stress reduction techniques.

Torrance Memorial offers a full range of services, classes and programs to help you stay well and fit. These not only encourage a healthy lifestyle, but they also enhance the healing process. Weight Loss Program -- Scale Down

A weight loss program for those with 20 or more pounds to lose. A new 14-week session begins on April 29, 2008. Taught by a registered nurse, with special presentations by dietitians, exercise specialists and behavioral health professionals.
A program to change the way you think about weight loss. This motivational program uses nutritious meal replacements and one low-calorie meal per day to launch weight loss. The program includes comprehensive body assessments and a supportive learning environment.

Look Good Feel Better

This free class provides cancer patients with hands-on experience using make-up to enhance their personal appearance during and after chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Each participant will receive a gift package of make-up.

Woman to Woman Image Enhancement Center

Cancer patients face numerous side effects on their way to recovery. Among the most difficult side effects for women can be losing their hair and having their appearance change as they cope with fatigue and other problems.

Torrance Memorial offers a special service to support women experiencing the side effects of chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation therapy. The Woman to Woman Center offers free consultation to women who have treatment-related hair loss. Staffed by trained volunteers, the Center offers private, individualized instruction on the use of hats, scarves and hair pieces, and other appearance-related changes that occur.

Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course

This two-day course provides a comprehensive review of the knowledge needed to administer cytotoxic and biotherapeutic agents. Upon successful completion of the course and post-test, participants will receive an ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Card. The course fee includes all course materials, copy of the ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Guidelines and Recommendations for Practice, 2nd Ed., continental breakfast both days and Continuing Nursing Education Credits. BRN approved for 13.5 CEUs, Provider No. 2580.
Class space is limited and deadline for registration is 1200 on Thursday, May 8, 2008.
Date: May 12 and 13, 2008, 8 AM to 4 PM.
Cost for the course is $225 ($100 for Torrance Memorial employees and POSS employees). A full refund will be given if this program is cancelled. No fees will be refunded if the participant cancels within 48 hours of the program. Cancellation prior to 48 hours will receive a refund, minus a $20 processing fee.
