Our goal is to provide high quality services promptly and conveniently in the most comfortable and pleasant surroundings. The information provided here is intended to help make your visit go as smoothly as possible.

Modern cancer diagnosis and treatment depends on radiology and other sophisticated imaging technologies to locate abnormalities, clarify diagnoses and evaluate the extent of the disease. The Graziadio Radiology Center and The Polak Imaging Pavilion have technologically advanced imaging equipment available, including:

  • CT Scanning
  • MRI
  • Fiber optic endoscopy
  • Ultrasound
  • PET Scanning
  • PET/CT

These technologies provide minimally invasive screenings while providing patients with the best diagnostic options available. The images obtained through these studies help cancer specialists create an effective, appropriate treatment plan for each patient's individual condition. Our skilled radiologists carefully evaluate and compare the results of each study so that an accurate diagnosis of any abnormality is assured. Additionally, our highly trained technicians make sure that all imaging studies are performed with the patient's comfort and privacy in mind.

The Graziadio Radioligy Center is located on the ground floor adjacent the medical center's Emergency Department. A reception area and seating is available for patients and visitors awaiting an outpatient test or procedure

Parking is available in the East Parking Structure accessible from Lomita Boulevard

Diagnostic Radiology

In addition to having a wide array of imaging modalities available to detect abnormalities at the earliest possible stage, Torrance Memorial radiologists are specially trained physicians who use X-rays and other imaging techniques to obtain specimens of suspicious areas for biopsy. They guide needles and small tubes called catheters and miniature tools directly to the site of the disease for diagnosing cancer without surgical biopsy. This assures accurate diagnosis using the least invasive method of obtaining necessary tissue. Diagnostic services include:

  • Needle Biopsy
  • Large core needle biopsy
  • Fine needle aspiration
  • Transjugular liver biopsy - A long, thin catheter is inserted into the neck (jugular) vein through a small nick in the skin and threaded into a vein in the liver

Pathology

An accurate diagnosis is one of the most important tools in the evaluation of someone suspected to have cancer. The Pathology Laboratory at Torrance Memorial is staffed by physicians who have extensive experience in examining tissue specimens to pinpoint the type and nature of the suspected cancer. Our specialists maintain relationships with the pathology departments of the country's most prestigious academic and research facilities so that expert second opinions on tissue specimens can be readily obtained. Without an accurate diagnosis, optimal treatment plans cannot be created for addressing the patient's tumor. The pathologists at Torrance Memorial Medical Center accomplish this goal by using the latest, most up-to-date laboratory equipment that ensures rapid tissue processing and diagnosis, so that physicians receive an accurate diagnosis as quickly as possible. The majority of tumor diagnoses are made within 24 hours after receiving the tissue biopsy in our lab.

In addition, all new cancer diagnoses are shown to multiple pathologists to further ensure the accuracy of the diagnosis. Finally, if a diagnostically challenging tumor is found, our pathologists will consult with the country's most renowned experts in a particular pathological field for a second opinion.
