Thelma McMillen Center for Chemical Dependency Treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chemical dependency?

Chemical dependency is characterized as the inability to stop drinking or taking drugs despite physical, mental, family, financial or legal consequences. According to the National Institute on Drug Addiction, the chemically dependent are one-third less productive than workers who don't use drugs.

How do I know if I have a chemical dependency problem?

People caught in a downward spiral of substance abuse often are unable to interact productively with those around them. As a result, they may neglect the needs of their loved ones, suffer from a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms and experience problems on the job. Often, those addicted feel controlled by the drugs and alcohol they are using. They have a preoccupation with the substance, use of the substance despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking.

How can I go through treatment and lead a normal life?

The Thelma McMillen Center for Chemical Dependency Treatment is an outpatient program allowing individuals recovering from substance abuse to continue their day-to-day activities while learning how to stay clean and sober. Most of all, the program allows people who have drug and alcohol problems to learn new behaviors while living and working in environments that are part of their real-life experiences.

Who pays for treatment?

Most insurance plans cover the cost of the program, but preadmission insurance verification is available free of charge through the medical center. Staff members maintain open communication with referring physicians and organizations, including providing written reports upon request.

How do I stay sober once treatment is over?

Support doesn't end when the treatment phase of the program is complete. On the contrary, the staff continues to provide ongoing support to participants and their families as the reality of sobriety becomes the gift of life. This phase includes group and individual therapy as well as private sessions if needed. In addition, Torrance Memorial also offers an alumni program for those who wish to join.
