Early Detection & Diagnosis

Early detection and improved survival rates go hand in hand.

Torrance Memorial offers educational materials and diagnostic services to aid in the earliest possible detection of various kinds of cancer.

Imaging & Radiology

Modern cancer diagnosis and treatment depends on radiology and other sophisticated imaging technologies to locate abnormalities, clarify diagnoses and evaluate the extent of the disease. The Graziadio Radiology Center has technologically advanced imaging equipment available, including CT scanning, MRI, fiber optic endoscopy, ultrasound, and PET scanning. These technologies provide minimally invasive screenings and are upgraded as necessary to provide patients with the best diagnostic options available.

The images created through this technology help cancer specialists create an effective, appropriate treatment plan for each patient's individual situation. Our skilled radiologists carefully evaluate and compare the results of each study so that an accurate diagnosis of any abnormality is assured. Additionally, our highly trained technicians make sure that all imaging studies are performed with the patient's comfort and privacy in mind.

Pathology

Accurate diagnosis is one of the most important aspects in the evaluation of someone suspected to have cancer. The Pathology Laboratory at Torrance Memorial is staffed by physicians who have extensive experience in the examination of tissue specimens to pinpoint the type and nature of the cancer.

Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center

Because breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women, Torrance Memorial's cancer care includes a comprehensive breast program.

Mammography, a low-dose X-ray of the breast to detect abnormalities, is available at the fully accredited Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center.

If an abnormality is detected, additional tests are performed. The Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center specializes in breast ultrasound, stereotactic (nonsurgical) breast biopsy and other diagnostic testing. Radiologists, specially trained in the interpretation of breast imaging, provide diagnoses for all types of breast abnormalities.

For women concerned about their risk for developing breast cancer, the Oncology Nurse at the Cancer Resource Center offers information on genetic testing, psychosocial and family support, and education regarding all aspects of breast health and cancer risk reduction strategies.

All women are invited to learn the correct way to perform breast self-examinations at the Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Breast Diagnostic Center. Specially trained, registered nurses provide this education in a private, supportive setting free of charge.
