Torrance Memorial Receives Ahmanson Foundation Grant To Expand Emergency Department Digital Imaging Services

Torrance, CA - Torrance Memorial Medical Center has received a substantial grant from The Ahmanson Foundation to expand digital imaging capabilities of its Emergency Department with the installation of a new, state-of-the-art Computed Tomography (CT) scanner.

"Through this generous grant, thousands of South Bay and Peninsula residents will benefit from the clinical and operational advantages of a Dual Source CT unit in Torrance Memorial's Emergency Department," said Craig Leach, Torrance Memorial President/CEO. "The advanced speed and resolution of this Dual Source unit will leverage the expertise and wisdom of our physicians and will optimize outcomes for our emergency patients."

Computed Tomography (CT) imaging, also known as "CAT scanning" (Computed Axial Tomography), combines the use of a digital computer with a rotating X-ray device to create detailed cross sectional images or "slices." With the aid of computers, those slices can be reconstructed into a three-dimensional image of all or part of the body. CT has the unique ability to image a combination of soft tissue, bone and blood vessels.

For certain especially critical Emergency Department patients, CT imaging is essential-assisting in diagnosis and treatment decisions that impact future quality of life and, in some cases, meaning the difference between life and death. When "time is brain," CT imaging can confirm a stroke, assist in identification of the type of stroke and provide information for treatment decisions. Further, state-of-the-art CT scanners advance these capabilities, providing increased resolution to assist in diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular events.

This is the first contribution to the medical center by The Ahmanson Foundation, which serves Los Angeles County by funding cultural projects in the arts and humanities, education at all levels, healthcare, programs related to homelessness and underserved populations as well as a wide range of human services. By supporting non-profit organizations that demonstrate sound fiscal management, efficient operation and program integrity, the Foundation strives to enhance the quality of life and cultural legacy of the Los Angeles community.
