Community Health Education Program Descriptions

Breathe Freely: A Stop Smoking ProgramThis eight-week series will support you with the tools you need to quit: behavior modification, Guided imagery, smoking cessation aids, stress reduction techniques, and support systems. Get support for your resolution to stop smoking.

Caregiver's Training Learn about the various community resources available such as: home health care agencies, adult day care centers, assisted living centers, board and care facilities and skilled nursing centers, Learn strategies on handling the physical, emotional and economical impact often associated with being a caregiver.

How to B.E.A.T. Everyday StressStress is a part of life. Our habitual reactions to stress contribute to health problems. By examining our Body, Environment, Attitude and Thoughts, we can learn new ways to respond to stress that lead to optimum health

Medications 101 is a free educational lecture by a Torrance Memorial pharmacist. Topics include myths and facts about combining herbs, over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs; age-related effects of drugs; generic versus name brand medication. Miracle of Living Health Lecture Series is a free community health education series. Programs are scheduled the third Wednesday of each month, except December. For more information, or to receive program announcements, call (310) 517-4711.

Life Saving Skills

CPR is offered to healthcare professionals and to the community. Upon successful completion of class, an American Heart Association card is given. Heartsaver is a four-hour course that teaches basic heartsaving and one-person rescue. The cost is $32.50/person including AHA guide.

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS Certification) is an eight-hour course designed for health care professionals. This course covers basic heartsaver, two-person rescue, infant and child CPR and obstructed airway. The fee is $45.00/person.

BCLS Recertification is a four-hour course to review all BCLS topics, basic heartsaver, two-person rescue, infant and child CPR, and obstructed airway. You must have a current BCLS card to attend. The cost is $50.00/person. All fees include required textbook. Pre-registration is required. Call (310) 517-4701 for dates, times and locations.

First Aid teaches how to care for victims of injuries or sudden illness. Topics include uncontrolled bleeding, burns, poisoning, shock, and choking emergencies, as well as adult CPR. A certificate will be issued upon successful course completion. First Aid certification is valid for three years and CPR certification is valid for one year. Infant/Child CPR is a three-hour workshop that teaches life-saving skills for infants and children, such as CPR, and basic care of children in emergencies. The workshop includes what to do in case of choking, when to call paramedics, and what to tell them. Class is taught in both English and Spanish. The cost is $25.00/person. Weight Loss

Weight loss Program -- Scale Down A weight loss program for those with 20 or more pounds to lose. A new 14-week session begins on January 15, 2008. Taught by a registered nurse, with special presentations by dietitians, exercise specialists and behavioral health professionals. A program to change the way you think about weight loss. This motivational program uses nutritious meal replacements and one low-calorie meal per day to launch weight loss. Kids N Fitness is a fun and interactive series of six meetings for overweight children, ages 9 to 12. While kids are making new friends, a team of nutrition and fitness specialists teach and encourage the participants to make choices for a healthier future.
At a Kids N Fitness meeting, kids have fun learning:
  • The benefits of movement by using games, dance and strength training
  • Healthy eating habits
  • To set lifestyle goals and how to make changes in order to reach those goals.
Parents learn too! A parent or guardian attends all class meetings.
All materials are provided by the instructors and include a variety of gifts for the child to take home.
A medical clearance by a physician or nurse practitioner is a necessary prerequisite for enrollment
